Following a warm and dry summer in Europe, the risks posed by ultraviolet (UV) radiation to skin health have significantly increased. According to recent statistics, the number of new melanoma cases in Britain has surpassed 20,000 for the first time. This is while two other common types of skin cancer, basal cell and squamous cell, pose much lower risks.
Ageing Population as a Major Factor in Cancer Prevalence
The rise in skin cancer cases in Britain reflects demographic changes and the ageing of the population. Nearly one-third of those diagnosed with cancer are over 75 years old. However, this increase is not solely due to an ageing population; it is also linked to new challenges such as the shortage of healthcare services in the British health system. Currently, melanoma is recognized as the fifth most common cancer in the country, following prostate, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers.
Suggestions for Changing Public Behavior
In light of the rising melanoma cases and pressure on the health system, calls for changing public behavior and implementing stronger health measures are increasing. Recently, a group of Members of Parliament proposed a ban on advertising for tanning beds. These beds, along with sunburn and tanning, are associated with an increased risk of skin cancer. Last year, public health experts supported a complete ban on the commercial use of these beds, similar to actions taken in Australia and Brazil.
Given the current situation, is it not time for us to change our attitude towards skin protection and recognize the sun as a potential enemy?
