More than ٥٠ Lime electric bikes have blocked Lime Street in London, causing problems for pedestrians and drivers. Benedict Sims, ٢٨, captured a photo of the situation at ٢ PM on Tuesday, showing the accumulation of bikes on the sidewalks in central London.
Poor Condition of Lime Street
Sims, who works in insurance, estimated that between ٥٠ and ٧٠ bikes were parked on this street. He said pedestrians can hardly pass through this accumulation. He explained: "In my office, four bikes were parked in front of the doors, and I could barely get out. Then I looked to the right and saw this situation."
He continued: "In the picture, you might see half of the bikes present on the street. A truck driver had to move four bikes to be able to get out of there. Delivery drivers have always parked there, even though this is not allowed."
Response to Parking Issues
Sims pointed to the congestion on Lime Street, especially in the mornings when many Lime bike users try to park their bikes in designated areas. He said: "If you stand there for five minutes, you can hear the sighs and complaints of people. Locals are unhappy with this situation."
The Lime program recently announced that an area on the southern side of the street has been designated as a "no-parking zone" and users have been warned that they may be fined for parking there.
Some areas of London have announced new measures to tackle the illegal parking of electric bikes that block sidewalks. In recent years, the presence of electric bikes on sidewalks has become a familiar sight in London, and calls for solutions to this problem have increased.
Last year, the situation in Islington escalated to the point where the area threatened electric bike operators that they would be banned from the area if they did not resolve issues such as obstructive parking and nighttime noise.
Lime and the City of Westminster have signed a new agreement aimed at keeping sidewalks clear of illegally parked electric bikes in this area. Pressure on users has also increased, as Lime has announced fines for users who violate parking rules.
Users who frequently park outside of authorized locations may face fines ranging from £٢ to £١٠. Repeated violations may lead to a ban on using Lime bikes for these individuals.
