In response to alarming warnings from experts about the potential threats of superintelligent AI (ASI), over 70 British representatives and officials have written to Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, calling for a halt to the development of this dangerous technology. This request follows a claim by an employee of Anthropic that this technology could eliminate all humans within a decade.
A Call for Immediate Action
In this letter, which includes the signatures of 15 former ministers as well as senior officials from the Labour and Conservative parties, Burnham is urged to support a bill recently introduced in the House of Commons. This bill specifically addresses the prohibition of ASI, which has yet to be created, and claims that this type of artificial intelligence could surpass human capabilities in most fields.
Experts believe that given the rapid advancement of technology, the risks posed by superintelligent AI are serious, and therefore, the time for immediate action has come.
