Rossum and the creator of 'Furious', Liz Meriwether, realized that true stories and women's experiences could add depth to characters and narratives. They conducted extensive research on female serial killers and the social issues surrounding them to create a meaningful and impactful story. Rossum states, 'All female serial killers are victims of violence, and this reality was very impactful for both me and Liz.'
In this context, research from Penn State University also shows that one-sixth of female serial killers have typically faced issues such as physical and sexual abuse, mental health problems, and substance abuse. These realities add more depth to the story of 'Furious' and allow viewers to empathize with the characters.
Rossum also refers to her personal experiences interacting with law enforcement and their training. She says, 'I spent a lot of time with FBI agents and NYPD and participated in physical and weapons training. This experience helped me gain a deeper understanding of the identity and challenges faced by those working in this field.'
The character Alice Black in 'Furious' represents the complexities of women in society. She is not only seeking justice for others but has also been a victim of violence herself. Rossum explains, 'Women can be both very powerful and under pressure, and these contradictions are part of the appeal of female characters.'
