Pezeshkian emphasized Iran's strategic geography and its rich energy resources at this meeting. He reminded the BRICS countries that Iran can act as a bridge for international trade, and the use of national currencies can reduce dependence on the dollar and enhance economic security.
The President of Iran also pointed to cooperation opportunities in various fields including energy, transportation, and technology, adding: "We need to move towards national currencies instead of relying on foreign currencies to facilitate our trade and protect ourselves from currency fluctuations."
Challenges and Opportunities
This proposal comes at a time when BRICS countries are seeking to reduce dependence on the Western financial system. However, challenges such as creating suitable financial infrastructure and bilateral or multilateral agreements for the use of national currencies exist.
In this regard, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for closer cooperation among BRICS countries, stating: "We must leverage each other's capacities and stand together against global challenges."
