'Empire Street Productions' stated in a release: 'The planned production for 2027 of 'Sunday in the Park with George' at the Barbican will no longer proceed as originally intended. The musical 'Sunday in the Park with George' is inspired by the famous painting 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte' by Georges Seurat. The story revolves around a fictional version of this French artist who is trying to complete his painting while also exploring his relationship with his muse, Dot. The show also addresses the challenges of balancing life and art.
This revival was set to be a highly anticipated reunion for Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey. However, this is not the first time that 'Sunday in the Park with George' has faced delays in London. A previous attempt to revive the show, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, was indefinitely postponed in 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
