Tina McDermott, a 45-year-old mother who recently lost her 18-year-old son Billy in a tragic accident, has strongly criticized Ryanair's policies. She was scheduled to travel from Newcastle to Alicante in Spain on August 30 but had to cancel the trip due to her son's death. This heartbreaking event occurred on August 19, and Ryanair informed her that because Billy passed away more than 10 days before the flight date, she was not entitled to a refund.

Ryanair's Ruthless Policies

Tina, who had planned a four-day holiday with her husband, quickly contacted Ryanair's customer service to request a refund after receiving the news of her son's death. After providing her son's death certificate, she was met with disappointing news: "You are not entitled to a refund because Billy's death occurred less than 10 days before the flight." This policy clearly seemed unreasonable to her, and she became extremely angry about it.

Bitter Emotions and Request for Review

Tina spoke about this experience, saying: "Losing Billy was a huge shock for us. He had just turned 18, and I couldn't go on the trip. All I wanted was to be with my family and arrange my son's funeral." Referring to Ryanair's policy, she described it as a "slap in the face" and called for a case-by-case review of death-related instances.

Tina also expressed that these policies are not only financially wrong but also morally incorrect. She pointed out that "£350 is a small amount for a large company like Ryanair" and emphasized that this issue is more about principles than money. She urged Ryanair to reconsider its policies and pay more attention to families who are experiencing loss.

In response to these criticisms, a Ryanair spokesperson stated that the company's policies regarding the death of family members are correctly implemented and noted: "Ryanair's bereavement policy allows passengers to request travel credit in the event of the death of a close family member within 10 days before the flight. Since this case is outside of that timeframe, this passenger is not entitled to travel credit."

Tina McDermott hopes that by voicing her concerns, she can bring about changes in Ryanair's policies and help other families face fewer challenges in similar situations.
