Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister, is seeking ways to reduce energy bills, and it seems that a £200 reduction is in store for some British households. With unprecedented energy price increases following the war in Iran, pressures on families have intensified, and the government is examining solutions to support those living in energy poverty.
Further Price Increases and Support Measures
At the beginning of next month, the average energy bill for households in the UK will increase by an average of 4%, reaching £1,723 per year. It is expected that this figure will exceed £2,000 by early 2027. In this context, some industry sources have reported the preparation of a support scheme called the “Energy Price Support Payment” (EPPP), which could be implemented during the next price increase in January.
Eligibility and Conditions for Assistance
This payment will be granted to families who receive the warm home discount, as well as to others in need of support. However, it is still unclear whether this scheme can include the millions who are living in energy poverty. A government spokesperson stated that “the Chancellor is fully focused on helping families and businesses to alleviate financial pressures.”
In the first weeks of his arrival at Downing Street, Andy Burnham promised to address the living conditions of the people and announced that VAT on bills would be removed starting in October. Currently, around six million households in the UK benefit from a £150 discount in winter, which is automatically granted to those receiving housing benefits, income-related allowances, or pension credits.
