A tragic incident in the icy waters of Alaska turned 15-year-old Derek Parker Aghnaanga into an unwitting hero. While fishing with his brother and cousin, he remained on the capsized boat for two days, battling harsh conditions and low temperatures.
Miraculous Rescue
In this heartbreaking event that took place in the Bering Sea, Derek was rescued as the sole survivor. His brother, Sydney Koluvi, 35, died in the accident, and his cousin disappeared during the night. Derek survived in freezing conditions without food or water, holding onto faith and hope, and was ultimately rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter and a fishing boat named "Northwest Explorer."
Family and Community Reaction
Derek's mother, Veena Koluvi, who was listening to the news on the radio during her son's rescue, said, "When we heard that Derek was alive, we all burst into joy and tears." She also noted that Derek always went fishing with Sydney, and after their father's passing, Sydney played the role of a father for him.
While Derek's family expressed their happiness at his rescue, they are also saddened by the loss of their brother and cousin in this incident. Veena wrote in a Facebook post: "Derek's story is amazing. He had no fear the entire time and knew that his older brother was under the boat. He survived solely through prayer." This incident not only showcases Derek's bravery but also reflects the strength of family and love in the toughest of circumstances.
