Lauderdale Synagogue in the Maida Vale area of London was attacked by fireworks immediately after a ceremony held to commemorate the Jewish New Year. The attack occurred as approximately 700 attendees were leaving the event.
Details of the Attack
A group of five suspects wearing hooded clothing attacked this Grade II synagogue. Synagogue staff reported that two fireworks were thrown at the building. One staff member said, "This attack happened in broad daylight and on an important day for the Jewish community, and it could have had serious consequences." He also emphasized that "we will be taking additional security measures, especially on important dates in the Jewish calendar."

Community and Police Response
Local residents also expressed concern about this brazen attack. A mother from the area said, "If these youths were indeed teenagers, we should be worried about what they are learning from others." The Metropolitan Police also stated that they are investigating the incident and have increased security patrols around the synagogue. In a statement, they said: "At 15:56 on Sunday, September 13, officers were called to reports of fireworks being thrown at the synagogue on Ashworth Street."
The police emphasized that no injuries have been reported and investigations, including the analysis of CCTV footage, are ongoing. The Jewish community has also been assured that necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety.
Increase in Anti-Semitic Incidents
A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust (CST), which advises the Jewish community on security, expressed concern over this incident and described it as serious. According to statistics, in the first half of 2026, 1,926 incidents of anti-Semitism were recorded across the country, indicating a 21 percent increase compared to the previous year. This statistic has heightened concerns about the safety of the Jewish community.
