Paul Scholes, the Manchester United club legend, has expressed doubts about Senna Lamens, the team's goalkeeper, and believes that this player cannot be the key to Manchester United's return to its glory days. This comment comes as Manchester United, under the guidance of Michael Carrick, is participating in the Champions League, but the competition for the Premier League title still seems out of reach.
Poor performance of Manchester United at the start of the season
Manchester United has managed only one victory in its first four league matches, suffering defeats against Hull City and Manchester City, and also settling for a 2-2 draw against Everton. Despite new contracts being signed with Andrei Santos and Youri Tielemans, Michael Carrick is still waiting for Carlos Balba to return from injury.
Manchester United also strengthened its attack last summer with the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Mateusz Kownacki, and has worked on rebuilding the midfield. However, Paul Scholes believes that the defense must be improved next year, or else significant success for the team will not be possible.
Doubts about Senna Lamens
Lamens, who was chosen as Manchester United's main goalkeeper last year, has yet to register a clean sheet in the Premier League this season. Scholes commented on this: "It seems they are doing things in bits and pieces. Last year, they organized the attack, and now it seems they have improved the midfield this season, but the defense probably needs strengthening next year."
He also pointed out that no team has won the Premier League without a top-level goalkeeper and said: "Lamens may be a suitable goalkeeper, but I still have doubts about that. You start with the defense, and that's a key point." Scholes is also concerned about the left-back position at Manchester United, as Luke Shaw has recently suffered an injury. He noted that it was expected that Manchester United would sign a new player for this position in the summer, but that did not happen, and Patrick Durgo has been introduced as Shaw's replacement.
Paul Scholes expressed doubts about this decision, saying: "It seems they thought that with Luke Shaw's situation at left-back, Durgo could be a suitable option, but I don't know if he can really perform well in that position or not."
