Swimming pools in Britain are increasingly facing a problem known as "stationary swimmers." These individuals stand in designated swimming lanes instead of swimming, causing disruption for other swimmers. This phenomenon has created significant dissatisfaction among competitive swimmers and has become a serious issue.
Stationary Swimmers and Disruption in Sports
In a recent experience, a swimmer named Alessandra reported from her local pool that as soon as she entered the pool, she noticed several people standing in the swimming lanes and chatting. This behavior made it difficult for her to swim comfortably and lose her focus. She stated, "When I go to the pool, I expect to be able to swim, not to encounter people who are just standing around and chatting."

Consequences of Inappropriate Behavior
This behavior is not only inappropriate but can also be dangerous. In fact, stationary swimmers in swimming lanes can cause accidents that pose risks to themselves and other swimmers. Experts emphasize that pools should clearly define the boundaries for using swimming lanes and ask swimmers to leave the designated lanes if they do not intend to swim.
Alessandra further said, "I think there should be better rules for swimmers. If someone doesn’t want to swim, they should be placed in a separate area so that others can swim comfortably."
On the other hand, Ella Foote, editor of Outdoor Swimmer magazine, also believes that pools should be open and accessible for everyone, but swimmers must take responsibility for their behavior. She says, "Good pools usually divide swimming lanes based on speed and have space for general swimmers. If someone wants to swim, they should be in the appropriate lane."
She also emphasizes that swimmers should avoid inappropriate behaviors in pools and respect the rights of other swimmers. "Swimming in a pool should be an enjoyable experience, not one faced with stress and disruption."
Ultimately, it seems there is a need for cooperation and mutual respect between swimmers and pool management to resolve this issue and improve the swimming experience in pools for everyone.
