A mysterious drone that entered NATO airspace was shot down last night in Lithuania's second largest city, Vilnius, by NATO fighters. The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, confirmed that this drone had entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and was quickly met with a military response.
Increasing Russian Threats
In his statements, Gitanas Nauseda emphasized the need for readiness and responsiveness to the increasing threats from Russia, especially following the escalation of tensions in Ukraine. He said: "Given that Russia is increasingly attacking Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Lithuania, along with NATO allies, will defend its airspace."

Background of Drone Operations
While Russia has not claimed responsibility for this drone, the financing and armaments of Belarus are largely provided by Moscow. This comes as reports emerged last summer indicating that Russia was behind hundreds of mysterious drone operations in Europe and the European Union. One serious report published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies examined this issue and concluded that Vladimir Putin's shadow fleet had sent drones to Britain and Europe, targeting airports, bases, and nuclear facilities.
Since ٢٠٢٤, there have been frequent sightings of mysterious drones at airports, military bases, and civilian areas, particularly in Lithuania, indicating Russia's increasing testing of its espionage capabilities. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Kremlin may have been able to identify coverage gaps and limitations in European integrated air defense systems by the time of response.
Last June, NATO fighters quickly took to the skies over Lithuania as concerns grew about the entry of a kamikaze drone into the airspace of this country. Residents of Vilnius were also called to observe necessary precautions as this country shares borders with Russia and Belarus. The warning signal that sounded indicated activities related to unmanned aerial vehicles.
