Changes in Series Production
Last summer, BBC made an unexpected announcement that it was shelving the Christmas special and instead considering Doctor Who for a new production. This means that production studios can now submit their proposals to lead this series into a new era. In light of this, BBC has recently officially issued a call for this series and has provided detailed expectations.
BBC's Expectations from Producers
BBC has stated that it is looking for a multi-part series (including specials) to be broadcast in 2028 and 2029, with the possibility of extending the contract for a second series if BBC is satisfied. The network emphasized that the series should have a contemporary feel and be creatively ambitious while remaining true to the values and characteristics that have made Doctor Who a beloved series across generations.
Additionally, BBC is seeking stories that establish a "balance between science fiction and strong emotional concepts" while also being a family program that preserves specifically British storytelling.
According to the details of the call, BBC is flexible in the structure of the series and has allowed producers to use either a serialized storytelling model or a weekly story format. BBC is also not committed to the traditional showrunner model that was present in previous revivals.
The final decision regarding the selection of the producer will be made in spring 2027. This call comes after the end of BBC's collaboration with Disney Plus, which concluded after only two seasons. While the future of Doctor Who remains uncertain, several CEOs of major studios have been questioned about their willingness to invest in the series. John Oliver, the Chief Commissioner of Narrative Programs in the UK for Prime Video, stated that he loves Doctor Who and welcomes any discussions on the matter.
