Jason Ferguson, the chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), commented on Mark Allen's ongoing absence from snooker competitions and emphasized that the organization is in continuous contact with Allen. Allen, a professional snooker player from Northern Ireland, has been absent from competitions since the semifinals of the World Championship in May, where he lost to his opponent Wu Yize with a score of 17-16.
Long Absence and Non-Participation in Tournaments
Since then, six major tournaments have been held for Allen, but he has withdrawn from all of them, including the Championship League, Shanghai Masters, China Open, Wuhan Open, UK Open, and English Open. Additionally, Allen has also opted out of participating in the qualifiers for the International Championship this week and the Shenzhen Open in the future.
The reason for Allen's absence from competitions is not very clear, and the only explanations provided refer to "personal reasons." This lack of transparency regarding Allen's situation has raised concerns among fans and the snooker community. Ferguson stated, "Mark is highly respected by all of us, and whatever is happening right now, we are thinking of him and wishing him the best."
Support and Communication with Allen
Ferguson stated that WPBSA, as the players' supporting body, is in contact with Allen, and this communication is being conducted through specific channels while maintaining confidentiality. He added, "I personally reached out to him, and I know that the organization representing the players is also in contact with him, and this communication continues."
The timeline for Allen's return to the field is uncertain, and he is currently awaiting his home event, the Northern Ireland Open, from October 18 to 25. After that, the UK Championship will take place in November, which Allen won in 2022, and this season's prize money has increased to £312,500.
Ferguson added, "From my perspective, I really like Mark Allen and admire his style of play and personality. I hope he returns to the fields soon and starts winning titles again. He is definitely a welcome member of this tour."
Allen has spoken very little about the duration of his absence, but in a statement released when he withdrew from the China Open and Wuhan Open in August, he expressed his disappointment and stated, "I am very sorry that I cannot participate in these two events in China, and I apologize to the fans and organizers in Taiwan and Wuhan. I love playing in China and appreciate the ongoing support we receive there."
He also recently posted a mysterious image on his Instagram story showing a character with a hat, with the song "The Sound of Silence" by Disturbed playing in the background. Allen is currently ranked thirteenth in the world rankings and, despite his absence from several events, remains among the top 16 players in the world. However, this situation may change quickly, especially if he does not participate in the UK Championship, which has substantial prize money.
