The Commander of the British Navy, Sir Green Jenkins, emphasized that the country must become a maritime power again to prevent defeat at sea against Vladimir Putin's fleet. In his private speech, he warned that Russia is "projecting to identify Britain's weaknesses" and may use British warfare tactics against itself in any future conflict.
Need to Strengthen the Navy
Sir Green Jenkins stated that Britain must "enhance its war readiness" and quickly take action to build more warships and drones to protect the Atlantic Ocean. He also remarked: "The greatest threat to our security today is Russia. Russia has advanced submarines that are becoming increasingly difficult to detect and also possesses precision weapons with long ranges and specialized systems for operations in deep waters."

Threat to Maritime Infrastructure
The navy is forced to deploy two warships weekly to track Moscow's vessels, as these ships are "projecting, testing, and mapping" the seabed to identify weaknesses. Sir Jenkins referenced World War II, stating: "Vital underwater infrastructure is now part of the strategic landscape. On the day Britain declared war on Germany, allies cut its transoceanic telegraph cables. I hope this does not happen again, but if war breaks out again, we know our enemies will try to use the same methods against us."
Sir Jenkins made this warning on the day Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with NATO Chief Mark Rutte for the first time. The Prime Minister is under political pressure to demonstrate how Britain will meet its NATO commitments to allocate 3.5% of GDP for defense spending by 2035.
In this context, Rutte praised Britain's efforts to increase defense spending in his speech and emphasized the need to strengthen joint capabilities against threats. He said: "NATO will not be influenced by Russia's hostile actions. Russia does not want us to help Ukraine, but their actions only encourage us to do more for Ukraine."
