A young couple named Sean Michieli and Gabriella Querino lost their lives in a heartbreaking accident in Venice. This incident took place on September 12, just a few months after the marriage of these two young individuals. Sean Michieli, 25 years old, was from the island of Burano in northern Venice, while his wife, Gabriella Querino, 26 years old, was from Brazil.
Details of the Incident
The couple collided with a water taxi in the early morning hours, between 5 and 6 AM, in the Canal of Tesera. Following the accident, Sean Michieli was severely injured and transferred to the hospital, but unfortunately, he lost his life after undergoing surgery.
Gabriella Querino went missing following the incident, and a search operation was immediately launched using fire department divers, jet skis, a marine unit, and a helicopter. Her body was found on Tuesday, nearly two kilometers from the accident site. It is reported that Gabriella was pregnant at the time of the incident, which has added to the sorrow of this event.
Reactions from Officials and Legal Investigations
Simone Venturini, the mayor of Venice, described the incident as "a tragic event that affected the entire city." Currently, an investigation into involuntary manslaughter is underway, and the 38-year-old driver of the water taxi is being questioned. His lawyer has stated that his client has been severely affected by the incident and toxicology tests have been conducted on him, but the results have not yet been released.
The driver claimed that he was transporting two passengers to Marco Polo Airport and that all the lights on his boat were on due to the morning darkness. He also stated that the boat of Michieli and Querino was moving at high speed and without lights, which led to this unfortunate collision.
Monica Sambo, a member of the regional council of the Democratic Party, emphasized the need for monitoring and precise regulation of water traffic in Venice, as well as improving the lighting of the canals to enhance passenger safety. She said, "This incident underscores the necessity for serious laws and oversight of water traffic."
Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto regional council, described the event as "a great tragedy for a family that was just at the beginning of building their future."
