A group of defendants who created panic and harmed passengers due to a tear gas attack at Heathrow Airport have been sentenced to imprisonment. This attack took place on December 7 of last year in the parking lot of Terminal 3, leading to several hours of closure of the terminal.
Details of the Incident
Tyrone Richards, Anton Clarke-Butcher, Omoneke Whyte, and Denzel Eduardo attacked two women who had just arrived from a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, South Africa. The four, with their faces covered, sprayed tear gas towards the two women in an attempt to steal their luggage.
The men, dressed in dark clothing and with covered faces, tried to chase the women to the elevator after the attack but were confronted by other passengers. When the elevator reached the ground floor, the tear gas leaked out, causing injuries to many passengers, including those present in a nearby café.
Consequences and Reactions
A café barista who coughed and vomited blood due to inhaling the gas stated in court that she felt a moment of fear. She said, "I felt fine for a minute and then suddenly felt sick." A customer service employee at Terminal 3 also described the incident as "terrifying" and added that he and other passengers experienced dizziness and respiratory distress.
Following the incident, passengers entering or exiting the airport faced significant disruptions, including delays in buses and shuttle trains. Richards was sentenced to 27 months in prison, while Whyte and Eduardo received 23 months and Clarke-Butcher was sentenced to 21 months.
The judge stated during the hearing that the group clearly had a specific target in mind for stealing the women’s luggage, adding, "Your group approached these two women and, by threatening violence, took their luggage from them." Unfortunately, the stolen luggage was never recovered.
