New changes in workers' rights in the UK require employers to meet with employees in person if they reject flexible work requests. This decision has been made to increase transparency and accountability in employers' decision-making processes.

Background and Reasons for the New Law

Last year, around 1.1 million employees in the UK left their jobs due to the rejection of flexible work requests. According to statistics, many workers expect their employers to provide more flexible working conditions. In this context, Louise Haigh, the Shadow Secretary of State, announced at the TUC trade union conference: "If an employer wants to reject an employee's request, they must meet with them in person and clearly explain their reasons."

This change in the law could lead to an increase in the approval rate of flexible work requests. Research shows that about 35 percent of the workforce in the UK regularly works from home, and 72 percent of them would like to work from home some days.

Potential Consequences and Challenges for Employers

With the approval of this law, employers can no longer easily shirk their responsibilities. Experts believe that the requirement for face-to-face meetings may increase the approval of requests, but this situation may be for the wrong reasons. According to Jim Moore, a labor relations expert: "Many requests may be rejected due to employers' fear of uncomfortable situations, which would not be a favorable outcome for businesses. However, this requirement also forces employers to be more careful in their decision-making."

While some employers may become suspicious of their employees, these changes are particularly good news for working parents, caregivers, and individuals with specific medical conditions. These groups clearly need more flexibility in their working conditions.

How to Utilize Opportunities in Face-to-Face Meetings

Employees now have the opportunity to present their reasons and necessities for their requests to employers during face-to-face meetings. Jim Moore emphasizes that employees can clearly explain why flexibility at work is important to them and can respond to the employer's challenges. If a manager rejects an employee's request without logical reasons, this can be used as evidence in any future litigation.

Employers should also collaborate with their human resources consultants to ensure that all rejections of requests have strong and logical justifications. This way, employers can retain their skills by accepting flexible requests and avoid the risk of losing talented employees.
