Nicola Sturgeon, former First Minister of Scotland, has proposed in a new documentary titled "The Monarchy: Time to Say Goodbye," which examines the future of the monarchy, that the monarchy should be abolished so that Prince George can be freed from the heavy responsibilities of future kingship.

Concerns About Prince George's Future

Sturgeon stated in the documentary that while she has a lot of sympathy for the royal family members, she believes that abolishing the monarchy would be in their best interest. In a conversation with John Humphrys, the documentary's host, she said: "One of the reasons for abolishing the monarchy is for the sake of royal family members, like Prince George. He really has no choice, and is that really fair?"

Statistics Supporting the Abolition of the Monarchy

Sturgeon is not the only one addressing this issue. Last year, the "National" newspaper, the only pro-independence newspaper in Scotland, published a poll showing that 53% of Scots want the monarchy abolished as the head of state and for the country to become a republic. Of this 53%, 36% wanted the monarchy abolished quickly, while 12% believed the change should occur within the next 10 years.

In contrast, 47% of respondents believed that Scotland should never abolish the monarchy. This poll reflects significant changes in public opinion regarding the monarchy in Scotland.

Experiences of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Sturgeon's comments about Prince George's inability to make decisions about his future actually reflect the experiences of some other royal family members. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties in January 2020 and moved to the United States to live a life away from the monarchy. Prince Harry recently spoke in an interview with Oprah Winfrey about feeling "trapped" in the royal system, stating: "I was trapped in this system, like the rest of my family members."

These comments and developments within the royal family may fuel increased discussions about the future of the monarchy in Britain, particularly in Scotland. By raising this issue, Sturgeon not only emphasizes the burden of responsibility on Prince George but also advocates for structural changes in governmental and social systems in Britain.
