The game Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, released in 2002 as a Nintendo GameCube exclusive, has recently garnered significant attention. According to Stephen Kick, co-founder and CEO of Nightdive Studio, this game may receive a remastered version in the near future.
A History of the Game Eternal Darkness
This game, developed by Silicon Knights and published by Nintendo, is known for its unique features, including psychological effects on the player. In this game, characters gradually lose control over reality, and the game plays with the emotions and mindset of the player. These features have made Eternal Darkness one of the beloved titles among fans of the horror genre.
Although the gameplay of this title has not been updated much over time, according to Stephen Kick, fans can hope that this game will soon be remade. Kick stated in response to a fan, "Eternal Darkness is one of my favorite games and deserves the attention that I know we can give it."
Progress of Nightdive Studio
Nightdive Studio is known for remaking classic titles from the 90s and 2000s. In recent years, this studio has released updated versions of popular games such as System Shock 2, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and Turok 3. Given this background, the remake of Eternal Darkness could become a successful project.
Considering that Nintendo owns the intellectual rights to Eternal Darkness, it seems that if Nightdive is working on a remastered version, this major company has also provided the necessary approval. Silicon Knights, the original developer of the game, went bankrupt in 2014 after a legal battle with Epic Games, and attempts by a group of former employees of this studio to raise funds for a spiritual sequel called Shadow Of The Eternals were halted due to lack of budget.
Nintendo's Return to the Horror World
While Nintendo has not released anything since the last time it utilized the rights to Eternal Darkness, the company has recently returned to the world of horror. A new horror title called Onyx: The Dark Grip has recently been announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, developed by Silent Hill 2 developer, Bloober Team. Additionally, Nintendo is set to release The Duskbloods, developed by FromSoftware, later this year.
