Unai Emery, the head coach of Aston Villa, stated that Alejandro Garnacho needs to put in more effort to earn a place in his starting lineup. Garnacho, the Argentine international, joined Villa Park on loan from Chelsea in the summer but has not yet made a notable impact at the club.
Garnacho's Performance at Aston Villa
The 22-year-old winger has appeared as a substitute in three matches during Aston Villa's defeats against Brighton and Arsenal, as well as in a goalless draw against Hull City. Last night, many expected him to shine in the match against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup, but Garnacho was not used as a substitute, and the team won 3-1.
Challenges Ahead for Garnacho
Emery clearly stated that Garnacho is currently ranked lower than others in the team and can only get closer to this position through hard work and consistent training. He specifically mentioned young players like George Hemmings and Ibrahim Mbeumo, as well as the 20-year-old player who joined from Grêmio, Alisson, who are currently ahead of Garnacho in his thoughts.
Emery said about this: "He needs to keep working. Work, work, practice, work. When he gets the chance to play, he needs to perform well. He is improving, but we currently have players ahead of him."
He also added: "George [Hemmings] is playing exceptionally well. Alisson is also understanding the situation better and giving us things I want. [Ibrahim] Mbeumo has responded well too. We need a competitive team and players who can compete in the style we have."
This season has started poorly for Aston Villa after a summer full of changes, having only earned one point from their first four games. However, Emery believes that the victory in the Carabao Cup against Coventry can help them get closer to their goals.
He stated regarding this: "I think today was an important game, and especially the two goals scored by Tammy [Abraham] give us confidence. Today we took a step forward to reach our goals. Of course, we need time to improve with these players, but today we took a step forward."
